National Party Seeks to "Rehabilitate Gays"

The revived National Party in South Africa will allow gay and lesbian members to serve, but says that the government will help to "rehabilitate" them. They are also strongly against the constitution allowing same-sex marriages. It is a shame that the NP is thinking of itself above science which shows that homosexuality is natural and cannot be altered, attempts to "rehabilitate gays" fail.

I partly agree here: a party that claims to welcome gays and lesbians on the one hand, but immediately points to the 'need' to "rehabilitate" such members to become fully acceptable, displays a great deal of hypocritical dishonesty. But that is one of the trademarks of the NP - then and now.

I happen to oppose same-sex marriage, but support civil unions that are equal in their legitimation, rights and protection to a marriage licence. I also oppose to play with the constitution, as it already covers ALL people of South Africa. The democratic principles entailed in the constitution are sancrosanct not just for one segment of society but for all the people.

In case that injustice is being done and one part of the population - say, gays and lesbians, for instance - I will be the first on the barricades to demand their rights within the constitution, which guarantees all people equality.
